- The proportion of UK A-level entries awarded top A or A* grades rose for the third consecutive year to 28.5 per cent, marking the highest rate outside pandemic-affected years.
- Total A-level entries exceeded 900,000 for the first time, with maths retaining its position as the most popular subject for the 13th year in a row.
- Speaking about England only, head of exams regulator Ofqual, Sir Ian Bauckham, said: “It’s largely driven by those changes in maths, growing popularity at maths and the high achievements that we’re seeing in maths.”
- Economics surged in popularity to become the fifth most taken subject, with Sir Ian saying it was “plausible to suggest” that job prospects are influencing students’ choices in terms of what they study.
- Boys outperformed girls in top grades for the second year running, with 28.9 per cent of boys’ A-level entries scoring an A* or A, compared to 28.0 per cent of their female classmates’ entries.
