Cameron Diaz has always been one of Hollywood’s highest-earning stars and has starred in some of the biggest hits of the 1990s and 2000s. As such, it’s no surprise that she also has a massive net worth. But what makes Diaz a true A-lister is the fact that she went into retirement 10 years ago and yet returned to the world of entertainment with much gusto in the Netflix spy thriller Back in Action, effectively ensuring that her net worth will keep rising in 2025 and the years to follow.

It is truly remarkable for a top star to command a mega fan following around the world after being away from the spotlight for an entire decade. Diaz’s triumphant return and the salary she has commanded for Back in Action underline why she was one of the most bankable stars from her debut in 1994 to her ‘retirement’ in 2014.

Diaz started her professional career as a model when she was still a teenager, studying in a high school in Long Beach, Los Angeles. She signed a contract with Elite Model Management and appeared in advertisements for Calvin Klein, Levi’s and Coca-Cola, apart from the July 1990 cover of Seventeen magazine at the age of 17.

At the age of 20, she auditioned for the lead role opposite Jim Carrey in The Mask. Released in 1994, The Mask became the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year and was the highest-grossing movie based on a comic book character at the time. The success of the movie propelled Diaz to instant global stardom, which she has continued to enjoy since in what can easily be called one of the greatest careers any star has had in Hollywood.

Over the next two decades, till 2014, Diaz headlined numerous box office hits. She also collected nominations for four Golden Globes, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and a BAFTA along the way for the movies There’s Something About Mary (1998), Being John Malkovich (1999), Vanilla Sky (2001) and Gangs of New York (2002).

By the time she went on her self-imposed retirement, Diaz had starred opposite major Hollywood actors such as Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Colin Firth, and worked with directors such as Ridley Scott and Martin Scorsese.

And who can forget her as the voice of Princess Fiona in the Shrek franchise? That voice role and character are counted among the best in animation films, with a pop culture fan base that continues strong to this day.

Diaz’s return to movies is now going to see her net worth rise, especially with the upcoming Shrek 5 in 2026 and another film with Keanu Reeves titled Outcome in the near future.

In her personal life, Diaz has been married to American musician Benji Madden since 2015. They have two children.

The cumulative net worth of Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden comes to around USD 180 million, according to multiple reports, of which USD 40 million is Madden’s personal share. This means that Diaz has a net worth of around USD 140 million. Her fortune makes her one of the richest stars in Hollywood, a status she has earned due to the box office success of many of her movies in a rather short period of time.

Diaz has acted in leading roles in over 35 movies starting with her debut film, The Mask (1994). It is worth noting, once again, that Back in Action marks her return to acting after 10 years. This means she was active in films for just 20 years in the three decades of her professional life. In spite of this, the cumulative worldwide gross of her movies comes to around USD 5 billion. The massive box office revenue of her movies underscores Diaz’s popularity and the impact she has had on Hollywood. This is also why she still has a very high net worth despite a 10-year absence from the spotlight.

Even when she was 40 in 2013, Diaz was counted among the highest-paid actresses in the over-40 bracket. Such was her hold on the box office. With the streaming success of the comic thriller movie Back in Action and the highly anticipated upcoming movies starring her, it is expected that Diaz will continue to maintain her illustrious reputation as a global star and see more millions of dollars flow into her bank.

Cameron Diaz has delivered success in both live-action and animated movies, even though she has done only four of the latter to date — all in the same franchise. Yet all four movies occupy the first four places among the highest-grossing movies in her career, each grossing USD 492 million or more. Well, what else could you expect from a franchise as iconic and beloved as Shrek?

Her live-action movies are no less successful. She has two movies (barring her cameo in 2002’s Minority Report) earning between USD 301 million and USD 370 million, and nine that have earned between USD 200 million and USD 300 million.

Thus, here are the 15 highest-grossing movies of Cameron Diaz (all figures are from the box office database, The Numbers):

Shrek 2 (2004): USD 935 million

Shrek the Third (2007): USD 807 million

Shrek Forever After (2010): USD 756 million

Shrek (2001): USD 492 million

There’s Something About Mary (1998): USD 369 million

The Mask (1994): USD 351 million

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997): USD 298 million

Charlie’s Angels (2000): USD 259 million

Knight and Day (2010): USD 258 million

The Green Hornet (2011): USD 229 million

Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003): USD 227 million

What Happens in Vegas (2008): USD 218 million

Bad Teacher (2011): USD 215 million

The Holiday (2006): USD 204 million

Vanilla Sky (2001): USD 202 million

Diaz has never appeared in a scripted TV series. All her appearances on the small screen are as guests on major talk shows or reality TV shows. These include Saturday Night Live, The Drew Barrymore Show and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, the last two of which were after her self-imposed retirement from movies in 2014.

She was also the executive producer and host of the MTV environmental documentary Trippin (2005) and co-producer of Bad Teacher (2014), a sitcom based on her movie of the same name.

How much did Cameron Diaz earn as the salary for her movies?

Cameron Diaz has been a major A-lister since the success of her debut movie in 1994. She remained a leading lady or performed in main roles for the next 20 years, before going on a hiatus. Such has been her charisma that her return to acting is also in a leading role, as former CIA agent Emily, in Back in Action.

A report by Bloomberg suggests that one of the biggest reasons behind Diaz’s decision to return to acting was the huge paycheck she received from Netflix. Citing sources, the report revealed that even though Scott Stuber, who was president of Netflix for one year from 2023 to 2024, didn’t want to, he had to ultimately pay USD 45 million to sign Diaz for two movies for the American streaming giant.

Back in Action is the first of the two, meaning that Diaz will be seen in another film by Netflix. There is a huge possibility that it will be a sequel to the espionage action-comedy, as can be concluded from the ending of Back in Action.

Thus, Diaz has been paid at least USD 22.5 million for Back in Action. This is a mammoth, almost unheard of, paycheck for a star who has not been in the business for 10 long years irrespective of their A-lister status. It is especially a huge amount for a film that has been released on a streaming platform and not in theatres. Yet, it once again proves that Diaz remains a bankable star.

Information about her salary from most of her other movies is not very clear, but a 2014 article by Spear’s revealed that she received USD 12 million for Charlie’s Angels and USD 20 million for its sequel. Her paycheck for the sequel made her only the second Hollywood actress after Julia Roberts to command such a high salary for a single film.

The article also said that Diaz was reportedly earning up to USD 2 million per movie following her debut in The Mask till around the release of There’s Something About Mary, for which she earned her first Golden Globe nomination.

She earned USD 15 million for The Sweetest Thing (2002) and USD 17.5 million for the epic period drama Gangs of New York (2002) by Martin Scorsese. The former earned USD 63 million at the box office while the latter had a worldwide haul between USD 183 million to USD 193 million along with 10 Academy Award nominations.

As for the Shrek franchise, Diaz was paid USD 3 million for the first film. When it emerged as one of the highest-grossing animated films of its time, her paycheck for the subsequent instalment reportedly rose to USD 10 million. Her total payout for the third film was much higher. According to a 2007 report by the Associated Press, she earned USD 30 million for Shrek the Third due to a contractual share in the profits.

Her earnings for the fourth instalment are not clear, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the actual pay was more than what she got for the third film given the record-breaking box office success of the franchise itself. It is, therefore, expected that her salary for Shrek 5 will certainly be in eight figures.

Even though the salary that Cameron Diaz earned for Back in Action seems to be the highest upfront payment she has received to date, the A-lister has earned far more for a single film.

When Diaz agreed to star in Bad Teacher, she reportedly took a pay cut from USD 15 million to settle for a salary of USD 1 million but negotiated her contract for a backend deal that gave her a cut of the film’s box office earnings.

The deal, also known as first-dollar gross, paid off. Even though critics didn’t like it, Bad Teacher was a huge box office success and Diaz took home around USD 42 million.

She did something similar for The Other Woman (2014). According to her Forbes profile, women flocked to watch the movie even though it was panned by critics. It earned around USD 190 million and possibly helped Diaz land on Forbes’ ‘2014 Celebrity 100 Earnings’ list.

Avaline is the name of the wine company that Cameron Diaz co-founded with serial entrepreneur Katherine Power in July 2020.

According to a March 2023 Forbes story, it is the “first 100% organically farmed wine with no additives”. The report further stated that the wine offers “clear transparency by listing ingredients and nutritional information on the front and back labels”. Quoting Jen Purcell, the president of the company, Forbes reported that Avaline has achieved over USD 20 million in sales revenue since its launch.

The women-led company had 25 employees when Forbes published its report. By that time, it had already been hailed as the best in the organic ultra-premium price segment of USD 14 to USD 19.99 and the second-best organic wine brand in US retail, selling around 150,000 cases per year by 2023.

Assets owned by Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz has used her USD 140-million net worth quite wisely on real estate and owns more than one house in the US. Most of the properties she bought or still owns are located in New York and California, the two prime property destinations where America’s elites pump their money. She apparently co-owns a couple of properties with Madden.

Reports suggest that Diaz currently owns at least three properties. Two of these are in California. She bought a large home in Beverly Hills in 2010 for USD 9.5 million and owns it to date. In 2022, she bought a mansion in Montecito with Madden for USD 12.6 million.

She also owns a condominium in New York City’s Chelsea neighbourhood, which she purchased in 2013 for USD 9.5 million. This is the same city where she had a 2008 property — a condo in Greenwich Village, which she let go of in 2015 for around USD 4 million. Thus the total worth of the three properties she owns comes to around USD 31 million.

One of her earliest mega properties in Los Angeles was a two-bedroom home in Hollywood Hills which offered uninterrupted views of the Sunset Strip. She bought the 2,225-square-metre property for around USD 1.3 million in 2001 and held it for the longest time, before selling it for around USD 5 million to music icon and Wicked (2024) star Ariana Grande in 2022.

Two years later, she listed a 1.6-acre Beverly Hills property with a mansion she bought with Madden in 2020 for USD 14.7 million. The asking price of the seven-bedroom property, located in the Benedict Canyon neighbourhood, was set at around USD 17.8 million. It is not clear if the property is on the market or has been sold.
