If you're looking for an unforgettable escape in Malaysia, Sunway Banjaran Hot Springs Retreat is the perfect place to disconnect, recharge, and experience a tropical oasis like no other. I am speaking from first-hand experience as I took my family to this amazing resort for a chill during the recent holiday break. It was indeed my most memorable short retreat.

The first thing I noticed was the very warm and courteous team of staff from the buggy boy to the waiter/waitress, the F&B Manager, and the chef serving us. The environment was indeed enchanting and the ambiance was most conducive for relaxation and chill, free from the worries of the world.

There are a lot of amazing outlets and facilities, however, I will only evaluate those that I and my family have used.

Dining

  1. Pomelo Restaurant – Rating: 5/5 (Excellent)

Pomelo is an absolute gem for those who love fresh, organic food with a touch of elegance. The farm-to-table concept really shines through here, with every dish beautifully plated and made with top-notch ingredients. From local flavors to international favorites, there’s something for everyone. The open-air dining environment surrounded by greenery makes it even more special. It’s both sophisticated and unpretentious, which makes every meal a delight. Of the 2 days, we had breakfasts and a lunch here. We had dinner here on the second night. The food was delicious and mouth-watering.

2. Jeff's Cellar – Rating: 5/5 (Excellent)

This was the first time my family and I were dining inside a cave. It was a most enchanting experience for all of us. Jeff’s Cellar, this amazing restaurant mysteriously hidden in the depths of a 260 million-year-old cave took to us to an atmospheric level in fine dining. The ambiance is magical—dim lighting, cool air, and an unbeatable aura inside a natural limestone cave. The cuisine is creative, and the wine selection is impressive. During the first night of our dining here, the Sous Chef, Jason appeared at our table to ask us personally for our feedback on the food they served there. I understand Executive Chef Boon who created the Jeff Cellar’s menu was in Kuala Lumpur helping out in another function. Throughout the evening we could also see the ever-smiling F&B manager, Grace going from table to table to greet customers with such high spirits. It’s a high-end experience that’s perfect for a special occasion.

We also attended a wedding lunch of our daughter’s good friend, Kathleen. It was indeed a most romantic and exotic place to have a wedding here. You won’t find anything like this anywhere else in Malaysia. For any young couple planning for a wedding, I would strongly recommend this quixotic and moonstruck venue.

3. SkyBar – Rating: 4/5 (Good)

The SkyBar offers a more laid-back experience, ideal for those who want to relax with a drink after a day of exploring. The cocktail menu is great, with a variety of refreshing options. The views are a big selling point, offering a scenic look at the surrounding jungle. The food is more casual—think light bites like nachos and wings—but it complements the atmosphere well. It’s not as upscale as the other dining options, but still a fantastic spot to unwind.

Wellness Facilities

  1. Meditation Cave – Rating: 4/5 (Good)

This peaceful little cave offers the perfect retreat for anyone wanting to take a break from the outside world. It’s a small, simple space, but very effective if you're looking for some solitude and mindfulness. I spent about half an hour here, and it truly helped me disconnect and center myself. If meditation is part of your routine, this is a must-visit. It’s calm and quiet, with only the sound of nature surrounding you.

2. Thermal Steam Cave – Rating: 5/5 (Excellent)

This was one of my favorite wellness features. The steam cave is like stepping into a natural sauna. It’s warm, but not overwhelmingly so, and the natural steam helps open your pores and detoxify your body. It was especially a great relief for me as I had a long day and needed that such a place to relax. It left me feeling refreshed and light. Definitely worth a visit if you’re into wellness treatments.

3. Crystal Cave – Rating: 4/5 (Good)

The Crystal Cave is something different—it’s designed for energy healing and meditation, surrounded by natural crystals. Whether or not you believe in the metaphysical properties of crystals, the atmosphere is calming and serene. The crystals add a nice touch to the space, and it feels very peaceful inside. While I didn’t spend as much time here as in the Meditation Cave, I found it to be a unique, spiritual experience.

4. Ice Bath – Rating: 3/5 (Average)

I have to confess, the Ice Bath was not for me. After enjoying the hot springs and steam cave, plunging into freezing cold water was a shock to my entire system. That said, I know a lot of people would vouch for it for circulation and muscle recovery. If you’re into contrast therapy, it’s definitely worth trying. Personally, I didn’t find it as relaxing, but it’s a nice addition for those who like a cold dip.

Hot Spring And Other Facilities

1. Geothermal Hot Springs Dipping Pools – Rating: 5/5 (Excellent)

These pools are what makes Sunway Banjaran famous, and for good reason. The natural hot springs are so relaxing, and you can feel the benefits after just a short time in the water. The temperature is perfect, and the setting is picturesque surrounded by tropical greenery. I spent hours just soaking in the warmth, and it was the ultimate way to unwind. This is the highlight of the resort and something you absolutely can’t miss.

2. The Spa and Wellness Center – Rating: 5/5 (Excellent)

The spa at Sunway Banjaran offers a wide range of treatments, from massages to facials and body wraps. The therapists are professional and highly skilled. My wife and I opted for a signature Banjaran 90-minute massage, and it was easily one of the best we’ve had. The environment is serene, and you can hear the sounds of nature as you relax, which adds to the whole experience. I highly recommend scheduling a treatment during your stay.

3. Garra Rufa Pool

The thought of having fish nibbling your legs in water at first seemed scary. However, braving myself into the water and letting the doctor fishes doing their work nibbling away at my legs, felt very refreshed and reinvigorated. My family and friends enjoyed the experience as well. The surrounding environment and its tranquillity provided a relaxing and soothing feeling as the coolness of the breeze smoldered our bodies.

4. Jungle Walk and Scenic Tours – Rating: 5/5 (Good)

The resort offers guided walks through the surrounding jungle, which are a great way to explore the natural beauty of the area. The limestone hills and jungle trails are stunning, especially the unique varieties of the local flora and fauna. If you love nature, definitely make time for this.

Accommodation

Water Villa – Rating: 5/5 (Excellent)

Our stay in the Water Villa was nothing short of perfect. The villa was spacious, lavish, and designed to make you feel completely at peace. Waking up to the view of the water each morning was such a treat, and the private plunge pool was a highlight. It’s incredibly quiet and private, making it feel like your own personal retreat. The outdoor Jacuzzi and sun deck were fantastic additions that made relaxing easy. My wife and I took a dip in the hot spring bath and later into the cold water and it felt most reinvigorating and refreshing. If you want a villa that comes with a luxurious feel with a view, this is the one to choose.
