FORMER Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is set to rejoin the party that expelled him in January 2023, an aide to Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed to The Vibes.
The move, reported earlier by Berita Harian, comes ahead of the upcoming Sabah state election, with sources saying Khairy has already received Zahid’s “blessing” for his comeback.
Khairy, who was also a former Health Minister, was sacked from Umno for breaching party discipline during the 15th General Election, after openly criticising Zahid’s leadership and calling for sweeping reforms.
Political observers are divided over the implications of Khairy’s return. Prof Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi of Universiti Malaya sees it as a calculated step by Khairy to remain politically relevant.
“At a time when Bersatu is in turmoil, Umno is slowly regaining strength under the unity government,” Awang Azman said. “In this context, it is Khairy who needs Umno rather than Umno needing him.”
He added that Zahid’s willingness to accept Khairy back reflects the Umno president’s “magnanimity and openness as a leader.”
“The president was attacked openly by Khairy and even asked to step down. It is a good sign from Zahid to willingly accept Khairy back,” he said.
“Whether Khairy can add value to the party can only be seen after he returns — whether he can help elevate Umno’s strength.”
Independent political observer Sayuti Omar, however, criticised the decision, claiming Khairy brings “no added value” to the party.
“He is just another number as an Umno member. This is the man who disrespected the president,” Sayuti said.
“He has no grassroots support and is arrogant. The way he spoke about Zahid was not suitable for Malay political etiquette.”
Khairy has yet to comment on the reports of his return. - October 30, 2025
