As the joyous festivities of Hari Raya Aidilfitri draw near, families across Malaysia eagerly anticipate heartwarming reunions and cherished celebrations. Yet, for students hailing from Sabah and Sarawak studying far from home, the journey back for this special occasion often presents daunting obstacles, particularly amidst skyrocketing airfare prices.
However, amidst these challenges, the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) has once again emerged as a beacon of hope, extending a helping hand to students longing to return to their hometowns in Sabah for the festivities.
In a heartwarming display of solidarity, UPNM's initiative has recently garnered widespread attention on social media platforms, with a TikTok video posted by @grlcloud capturing the essence of the university's support for its students. The video showcases the departure of eleven students bound for Sabah, embarked on a flight organized by UPNM, set against the backdrop of the Subang Air Base.
Despite the unconventional mode of transportation, as the students boarded an Airbus A400M aircraft owned by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), the spirit of camaraderie and excitement remained palpable. While the aircraft is typically deployed for RMAF operational tasks, its utilization to transport students back to their hometowns underscores the remarkable collaboration between institutions to facilitate meaningful reunions amidst challenging circumstances.
In an exclusive interview with WeirdKaya, the original poster of the viral TikTok video, Dayang Najiha, shed light on the unique experience, highlighting the three-hour duration of the flight from Subang to Sabah. Despite the longer journey compared to commercial flights, Dayang emphasized that UPNM's service is provided to students free of charge, ensuring a seamless and comfortable journey home for the festive season.
Furthermore, Dayang clarified that while the A400M aircraft may lack the plush amenities of commercial planes, the initiative prioritizes students' well-being, ensuring their safe return home to celebrate with loved ones.
Amidst the public discourse surrounding the utilization of government assets for such purposes, with questions arising about resource allocation and costs, Dayang hopes to dispel any misconceptions, emphasizing UPNM's integral role within the MINDEF collaboration. With Vice Chancellor YBhg. Lieutenant General Datuk Mardzuki Muhammad at the helm, UPNM's efforts to secure aid flights for the festive season reflect a commitment to student welfare and community engagement.
