Tour operators face diesel costs as MATTA urges subsidies and fuel surcharges to sustain tourism sector now
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) has raised the alarm over the continued rise in diesel prices, warns that the escalating costs are placing an unsustainable burden on tourism transport operators.
In a recent statement, MATTA revealed the results of an industry survey showing that 68.5% of tour van operators consume more than 1,500 litres of diesel per vehicle monthly. Meanwhile, 54.8% of tour bus operators consume over 3,500 litres per vehicle each month.
The association stated these figures highlight a significant fuel dependency within the sector.
Many operators are currently working with minimal returns, struggling to maintain day-to-day operations and fulfil existing contractual obligations.
To support the industry during the current crisis, MATTA has recommended the implementation of temporary, targeted subsidies and a formal fuel surcharge mechanism.
The association suggested that a temporary fuel surcharge—similar to those used in the aviation sector—should be transparent, proportionate, and based on actual fuel consumption and operational needs.
MATTA President Nigel Wong emphasised the need for practical measures to ensure business continuity without compromising consumer trust.
“A transparent fuel surcharge mechanism, combined with targeted government support, will help the industry navigate this challenging period while maintaining service standards,” he said.
The association also urged the government to introduce targeted diesel subsidies, proposing an allocation of up to 3,500 litres per month for each vehicle to help operators manage costs.
MATTA Vice-President Subramaniam Kandasamy added that transport operators are no longer in a position to absorb continuous price hikes.
“This is not about increasing profits; it is about survival and maintaining the integrity of Malaysia’s tourism supply chain,” Subramaniam said, adding that the proposed 3,500-litre monthly allocation would provide immediate relief to those struggling under current market conditions.
MATTA also stressed by reaffirming its commitment to working with the government and relevant stakeholders to ensure the long-term stability and sustainability of the nation’s tourism industry.
