Ever since our first Prime Minister, the esteemed Founding Father of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, uttered these words seven times on that remarkable 31st of August in 1957, our nation embarked on a journey of independence from British colonization. From those earnest beginnings to the vibrant present, my heart resonates with my love for Malaysia, shaped by personal experiences, rich cultures, serene landscapes, and an abiding respect for our sovereignty.
As a young student named Isabel Lim Yu Tong, I've been privileged to represent Malaysia on the global stage. Last year, I secured my position as a world finalist in the Hippo English Olympiad 2022 in Italy, and I'm eagerly preparing for the upcoming Eurasian Spelling Bee Lexical Skills Competition 2023 as a world finalist in November. These experiences allow me to showcase the potential of my homeland even though I am from a M40 family, making Malaysia proud as a primary school student. I discovered a profound sense of pride and responsibility. Just as our great nation stood tall, I stood alongside, eager to showcase the warmth and diversity that defines us.
Throughout my journey, Malaysia has been my steadfast companion, the keeper of cherished memories and the crucible of invaluable life lessons. It's a place that has taught me the profound value of friendliness – With just a simple walk down the road, I can easily see two ladies who did not know each other strike up a conversation on a random topic as if they were old friends. Hence I pride myself in telling everyone that Malaysia is one of the friendliest countries in the world.
Our nation's cultural tapestry weaves together Malays, Chinese, Indians, and indigenous communities like Semai, Kadazan, and Iban. This diversity enriches every facet of our lives, from our vibrant cuisine, epitomized by the iconic Nasi Lemak, to our kaleidoscope of festivals – Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, and more. As a proud Malaysian, I treasure the privilege of partaking in these celebrations, savouring not only the flavours but also the unity that defines us.
Malaysia's landscape paints a stunning contrast between history and modernity. From the iconic Petronas Twin Towers to the storied Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur embodies our nation's evolution. Yet, it's in the heart of our rainforests that our uniqueness truly shines. These lush sanctuaries cradle treasures like the elusive Rafflesia flower, the majestic Malayan Tiger, and the steadfast leatherback turtle. These wonders represent our nation, evoking awe and igniting our responsibility as stewards of our precious environment.
Yet, no homage to Malaysia is complete without acknowledging the guardian of our sovereignty – our Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA), elected by the nine Malay state rulers. Their esteemed rule exemplifies dedication, inviting the reverence and loyalty of citizens. As a testament to this allegiance, I recite my pledge of loyalty each Monday during assembly, a ritual I undertake with pride, embracing the role of a devoted citizen.
Malaysia, my beloved homeland, captivates me for countless reasons. It's the symphony of cultures, the tapestry of landscapes, and the guardianship that kindles my passion. I offer my prayers for protection and prosperity for my country and its leaders. A boundless love envelops Malaysia, and throughout my life, I'll continue to echo the cry of independence with unwavering ardour – Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!
