The initiative was announced by the Social Security Administration as a one-time program tied to theEnumeration at Birth system. While the commemorative cards have drawn attention because of their connection to the Trump administration’s Freedom 250 initiative, the agency says they will be produced at no additional cost to families or taxpayers.
The announcement comes as events marking the semiquincentennial take place across the United States. According to the Social Security Administration, the commemorative designation applies only to original cards issued to eligible newborns during the specified six-month period.
Limited-Edition Cards Will Be Issued Only through the Birth Registration Process
According to the Social Security Administration, the commemorative cards will be distributed exclusively through the Enumeration at Birth program, which allows parents to request a Social Security number while completing birth registration at hospitals, birthing centers, or through licensed midwives.
The agency said the cards will be identical in function to traditional Social Security cards, with the only visible difference being the Freedom 250 logo printed in black ink. The designation is limited to children born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026.
The Social Security Administration also said replacement or duplicate cards issued during that period will not include the commemorative logo, even if the cardholder was born within the qualifying dates. Likewise, newborns receiving Enumeration at Birth cards outside the eligibility window will receive standard cards.
In a statement released by the agency, Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the cards recognize children born during the nation’s 250th year while highlighting the long history of the Social Security program. According to the Social Security Administration, more than 3.5 million children are born in the United States each year, and Social Security numbers have been assigned through the Enumeration at Birth program since 1987.
The Announcement Coincides with Broader Freedom 250 Celebrations
The commemorative cards are part of a broader series of activities organized around the country’s 250th anniversary. According to NBC News, Freedom 250 was established by the Trump administration last year to organize events celebrating the semiquincentennial, including the Great American State Fair, the Salute to America fireworks celebration, Sail250, the Patriot Games, and the Rededicate 250 prayer jubilee.
Freedom 250 is separate from America250, a nonprofit organization created by an act of Congress in 2016 to coordinate anniversary events. NBC News reported that critics argue Freedom 250 introduces partisanship into celebrations intended to remain nonpolitical, while the organization describes itself as nonpartisan and says its events are open to everyone.
The Washington Post reported that the advocacy group Social Security Works questioned whether the Social Security Administration was paying a licensing fee for use of the logo, adding that the agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Social Security Administration also cautioned families to remain alert to scams, stating that parents do not need to submit any additional applications or payments to receive the commemorative card. The agency said it will never contact families by phone, text message, or email requesting payment related to the program.
