In a move that could reshape Umno’s political trajectory, Umno Youth Chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh has publicly offered to mediate the return of key former party figures: Khairy Jamaluddin, Dato' Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, and Shahril Hamdan. The offer is being seen not just as a plea for party unity, but as a subtle acknowledgment that Umno cannot afford to sideline some of its most charismatic and experienced leaders as it seeks to rebuild its relevance in Malaysia’s political landscape.

Khairy, the former Umno Youth chief, health minister, and MP for Rembau, responded cautiously but did not shut the door. “That’s very nice of him,” he told reporters at a product launch event, acknowledging Akmal’s comments with restrained appreciation. He thanked Akmal for his remarks and support, saying he would certainly consider the offer.

His comment may appear non-committal, but it leaves enough room for political manoeuvring. For Khairy, who was unceremoniously sacked from the party in January 2023 over alleged disciplinary violations, a return could offer a chance to rebuild political capital - perhaps even reignite his long-speculated ambition for the top job: the prime ministership.

Akmal’s overture reflects a growing faction within Umno that recognizes the need to consolidate before the next general election. “Those who were disciplined had contributed in ways we cannot forget,” Akmal said, adding that real unity must involve reconciliation from both sides. The statement resonates with the sentiment that Umno, struggling to regain voter trust, needs all hands on deck - including those it once pushed out.

In this regard, the bigger question now is whether Khairy and Shahril Hamdan are willing to toe the line, working as team players under the incumbent leadership - especially with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi still at the helm.

Equally important is the stance of Hishammuddin Hussein, the former Umno vice-president and ex-defense minister. Though the Sembrong division has passed a resolution to lift his suspension, he remains hesitant and has signaled no intention of appealing, stating that he was never formally told of his offense.

With their return to the party, can they conform to the status quo and uphold its policies and direction without straying from the party’s ideological path?

Perhaps this is the moment for Zahid Hamidi to show some humility for the heavy-handed punishments meted out to these individuals. The return of such figures would not only symbolise a political healing but might also offer the reinvigoration Umno desperately needs.

After all, if the party genuinely seeks unity, forgiveness must follow accountability as party president Dato' Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has outlined clear conditions for any potential return. He stated that suspended or expelled members must show genuine remorse and prove their commitment to the party’s cause. Zahid stressed the importance of a measured and thoughtful approach when dealing with individuals who had previously criticised the party or left under controversial circumstances. “Our approach must be one of prudence. Otherwise, it would be impossible for those who have been suspended or are no longer Umno members to return and stand with us again,” he said.

However, not everyone in the party is aligned with Akmal’s conciliatory approach. UMNO Vice President Dato' Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has distanced the party from Akmal’s proposal, stating that it does not reflect Barisan Nasional (BN)’s official policy. “In fact, the matter has never been raised or discussed at the party’s highest level,” he said. Johari added that there was no need for the party to deliberate on Akmal’s proposal to act as a ‘bridge’ to reunite suspended former leaders. His remarks indicate that significant internal resistance still exists to reintegrating those previously disciplined.

Shahril Hamdan, former information chief and one of the party’s most promising young intellectuals, is another critical piece. His policy-driven approach and articulate presence could inject much-needed dynamism into a party often perceived as out of touch.

If Akmal succeeds in brokering their return, it may mark the beginning of a political renaissance within Umno. But that depends on whether all parties involved can set aside ego and embrace a shared vision. For Khairy, the decision is pivotal - either remain a political outsider or re-enter the fold as a team player with the hope of leading the party, and perhaps the nation, one day.

One thing is clear: Umno’s next chapter will be defined not only by who returns, but also by how far the current leadership is willing to go to bring them home.
