In September 1998, Anwar Ibrahim was sacked as Deputy Prime Minister by the Prime Minister who is also the President of UMNO.
Days later, the Supreme Council of UMNO expelled Anwar, who was the party’s deputy president from the party.
25 years later, in 2023, Anwar is now the Prime Minister.
And he is the President of PKR, the party he founded after his sacking and dismissal from UMNO, and leader of the Pakatan coalition.
Anwar became Prime Minister with the support of the UMNO-led coalition, the GPS coalition from Sarawak, and a few parties from Sabah.
On 27 January 2023, the Supreme Council of UMNO decided to sack and suspend some top-level members of the party allegedly for going or plotting against the party post the GE 15 results.
In September 1998, the reasons cited for the sacking of Anwar from the party were allegations of impropriety.
The sacking of these few top-level members in UMNO was for plotting against the party and its President post the results of the 15th General election.
Every Prime Minister that the country had since independence comes from UMNO or was formerly from UMNO.
Mahathir in his 2nd stint as the Prime Minister, Muhyiddin, and Anwar are no exceptions.
All are former members of UMNO and in fact, all were sacked from UMNO and later formed their own political party and coalition and eventually became Prime Minister.
It took Anwar almost 24 years to become the Prime Minister after his sacking.
Is the country going to witness one of those members targeted and rumored to be sacked from the party within these few days return as the Prime Minister of this country albeit with a new political party?
If the rumors are true and those sacked formed a new political party thereafter, the country could possibly witness a Prime Minister from the group of sacked members in the near future.
Would it take another 24 years for this to happen?
