Ordering food online has become increasingly convenient in today's digital age. Notably, many platforms offer a unique feature that allows customers to add specific requests or comments to their orders, granting them the freedom to tailor their dining experience. However, some remarkable instances reveal how this seemingly ordinary feature became a lifeline for women facing perilous situations.
In the year 2015, a distressing incident unfolded in Florida, when a woman found herself in a dire situation. Trapped by her boyfriend, who was armed with a knife, Cheryl Treadway devised a clever escape plan. She placed an online pizza order with a Pizza Hut in Avon Park and used the delivery instructions to send a covert plea for help: "Please help. Get 911 to me." In the comments section, she urgently typed "911hostage help!" Thankfully, astute Pizza Hut employees immediately alerted the police.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police encountered Treadway and a child at the door. They swiftly ensured their safety and apprehended Treadway's boyfriend, Ethan Nickerson. Two other children present in the home were unharmed. Nickerson faced multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a weapon, battery, false imprisonment, and obstructing justice.
A more recent incident in 2022, from New York, further exemplifies the ingenious use of food orders for help. A woman, trapped in a hostage situation, discreetly conveyed her distress by adding a note to her Grubhub delivery order. In the "Additional Instructions" section, she wrote, "Please call the police; he's going to call me when you deliver. Come with the cones, please don't make it obvious." Uncertain of the message's coherence, restaurant employees contacted the owner, who promptly instructed them to cancel the food order and contact the police without delay.

The New York City Police Department swiftly responded to the distress call, arriving at the scene around 6:20 a.m. The suspect, Kemoy Royal, faced a litany of charges, including rape, strangulation, criminal sex acts, unlawful imprisonment, menacing, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and sexual abuse. The victim, a 24-year-old woman, found herself safe from harm's way, thanks to her resourceful plea for help.
These stories serve as poignant reminders that vigilance is crucial, not just for restaurant staff and delivery personnel, but for everyone. In dire situations, subtle hints can save lives. By remaining alert and responsive, we may find ourselves in a position to assist someone facing adversity. These remarkable tales underscore the potential for online food orders to transform into lifelines for those in need.
