With the right cut, colour and fabric, a well-tailored suit can see you through everything from your first internship to the next big occasion. I visited Smart Master to find one that could do just that.
In Malaysia, getting dressed often comes with a practical consideration: the weather. With the heat and humidity, lightweight shirts, relaxed trousers and breathable fabrics tend to make more sense for everyday wear. A suit, meanwhile, can feel like something reserved for weddings, formal dinners or the occasional event that calls for a little extra polish.
Still, there’s plenty of reason to make room for one in your wardrobe. A good suit can accompany you through different stages of life, from your first internship interview and early career milestones to weddings, networking events and important work functions. Choose a timeless design and you’ll have something you can return to for years, with a few styling changes to keep it feeling fresh.
With versatility in mind, I headed to Smart Master to have a suit tailored to my preferences. I wanted something classic enough to wear across different occasions, with a fit and fabric that would make sense for Malaysia’s climate.
Finding the right fit

With the decision to invest in a suit made, I headed to Smart Master at The Exchange 106, a Malaysian menswear brand whose roots in tailoring date back to 1984, when founder Datuk Dickson Phang first began learning the craft. He established the Smart Master brand in 1998, opening its first store at IOI Puchong Mall a year later. Since then, the brand has grown to 20 stores nationwide, balancing its tailoring heritage with ready-to-wear formalwear for the modern man.
When I met Mr Lee, I already had a general idea of what I wanted: a suit that felt classic enough to wear across different occasions. After discussing the design, we settled on a charcoal grey double-breasted jacket with matching trousers.
Charcoal grey felt like a natural choice. It’s smart enough for weddings and work events, but understated enough to style in different ways. The double-breasted cut adds structure and presence to the silhouette, giving the suit a classic feel without making it look overly formal.
Fabric was another important consideration. With Malaysia’s heat and humidity, I wanted something breathable enough to wear comfortably throughout an event. We discussed the options and settled on a fabric that suited my preference for a suit I’d be able to wear regularly, rather than save for special occasions.
From the first fitting to the final suit

Once we’d settled on the design and fabric, I returned to Smart Master about two weeks later for a fitting. This gave me the chance to see how the suit sat on my frame and make any final adjustments before it was completed.
The fit is what makes tailoring worthwhile. Details such as the shoulders, jacket length and trouser break all contribute to how the finished suit looks, while small adjustments help it feel more personal. The fitting also gave me a better idea of how the proportions worked together, rather than relying on how the suit looked on a hanger.

After the alterations, I returned to collect the finished suit and tried it on one last time. The fit was spot on, and I was happy with how everything came together.
The process was straightforward: I went in with a clear idea of the look I wanted, worked with Mr Lee to settle on the details, and returned for the fitting and collection. Having those opportunities to check the fit along the way also meant I could see how the suit was coming together before taking it home.
One suit, three occasions

Since collecting my suit, I’ve worn it to a wedding and two work events, sticking to the same formula each time: the charcoal grey jacket, matching trousers and a black tank top.
It might seem like an unconventional choice for a suit, particularly for occasions that lean formal, but the combination works. The charcoal grey set brings structure to the outfit, while the black tank top gives it a more relaxed, contemporary edge. It also makes practical sense in Malaysia, where wearing another layer beneath a jacket can quickly become uncomfortable in the heat.
I like that the tank top keeps the overall look from feeling too corporate. Instead of a traditional shirt and tie, the simple black layer creates a cleaner silhouette and lets the suit do most of the talking. The monochromatic palette also makes getting dressed relatively effortless, with little need to think too hard about coordinating colours.

Of course, the combination will depend on the occasion. For a more traditional wedding or a formal business meeting, a collared shirt may be the safer choice. But for the events I’ve attended, the tank top struck the balance I wanted between looking put together and feeling comfortable.
Wearing the same combination across three occasions has also made me appreciate the value of choosing a suit that fits well and feels like my own. The versatility isn’t always about changing every component of an outfit. Sometimes, it’s about finding a formula that works for you and having a reliable suit to build it around.
For anyone investing in their first suit, I’d recommend thinking about how it fits into your existing wardrobe and personal style. A classic charcoal grey set offers plenty of room to experiment, whether you prefer traditional shirting or a more pared-back approach like mine.
Is a tailored suit worth it?
My experience at Smart Master has made a good case for investing in a suit you’ll genuinely wear. The charcoal grey colour, double-breasted silhouette and considered fabric choice gave me a piece that fits comfortably into my wardrobe, while the fitting process allowed the final result to be adjusted to my preferences.
For anyone thinking about getting their first suit, I’d start by considering where you’ll wear it most often. A classic colour such as charcoal grey or navy offers plenty of styling options, while a cut that feels natural on you will make it easier to reach for the suit beyond formal occasions. In Malaysia, it’s also worth discussing fabric choices with your tailor to find an option that works for the local climate.
A suit can feel like a significant purchase when you’re starting out, but its value becomes clearer when you consider how many occasions it can cover. From your first interview to weddings and work events, having one well-fitted option takes some of the guesswork out of dressing for the moment.
And if my experience is anything to go by, you’ll probably find more reasons to wear it than you initially expected.
