As a Malaysian citizen, I was initially thrilled by the new announcement from our Minister of Transport, Loke Siew Fook, stating that drivers no longer need to display their road tax on their car windscreen or carry a physical driving license. Instead, these documents can be accessed through a digital app, and patrolling officers can check the driver's details and road tax on their digital devices when necessary. This initiative was meant to make our lives easier and more convenient, but my recent experience with a JPJ roadblock proved that good intentions are not enough without proper implementation.
A few days ago, I encountered a roadblock which caused a massive traffic jam. When it was my turn to face the officer, he questioned why my road tax wasn't displayed on the windscreen. I politely informed him of the new regulation, but he was not convinced and asked me to pull over. To my surprise, the officer then requested my physical driver's license, which, according to the new law, is no longer required.
I asked the officer to check my information using his digital device, but he insisted that I either show my IC (identity card) or my virtual license on the app. This was contrary to the new regulations, which clearly stated that the responsibility falls on the officer to verify these details using their digital devices.
I couldn't help but wonder, what if it had been a senior citizen who was not aware of the new regulations driving their grandchild's car without the necessary documents? They could have been frightened and intimidated by the JPJ officer's demands, creating an even more stressful situation.
While I applaud the government's efforts to simplify our lives through digital solutions, this incident highlights the importance of proper implementation to avoid unnecessary confusion. Miscommunication between the government and enforcement officers can hinder the effectiveness of these initiatives, causing more harm than good.
I still support the unity government and their forward-thinking initiatives, but it's crucial that proper implementation and communication be prioritized. Otherwise, we risk turning these progressive steps into a source of confusion and frustration for the very people they were intended to help.
Let's work together to ensure our country continues to advance smoothly in the digital age.
