According to OrientalDailyNewsMalaysia, a seemingly innocent gesture at a coffee shop in Singapore’s East Coast area escalated into a confrontation after a 73 year old wanton noodle stall owner was allegedly pushed to the ground by the father of a young girl.
The elderly man, identified as Yang Song Kun, was at the coffee shop yesterday when he noticed a little girl, believed to be around three or four years old.
Finding the child adorable, Yang reportedly reached out and gently touched her head.
However, the gesture apparently angered the girl’s father, who reacted by pushing the elderly man, causing him to fall to the ground.
The incident was captured on CCTV, and footage of the confrontation was later shared publicly by the elderly man's family in an effort to identify the man involved.
According to the family, the father later offered a verbal apology following the incident.
However, they felt that a simple apology was not enough to address what had happened.
Yang’s son-in-law, Zheng Zhi Cheng, said the family understood that parents could be protective of their children, but believed there were other ways to respond to an unwanted interaction.
“If you don't like someone touching your child, you can scold them, talk to them or call the police, but you should not resort to violence,” Zheng said.
The family said they were not trying to create unnecessary conflict, but wanted an explanation and believed the matter should be handled fairly.
The incident has since sparked discussion over personal boundaries, parental instincts and how people should respond when they feel uncomfortable with someone interacting with their children.
While some may argue that parents have every right to protect their children and establish boundaries, others believe that physical confrontation should not be the first response, particularly when dealing with an elderly person.
