Shaftsbury Square is a landmark mixed-use development in Cyberjaya. Completed in 2013, it symbolize the city's transition into a self-sustaining tech hub by seamlessly integrating retail, corporate, and residential spaces. It acts as a central lifestyle and business anchor for the community. It houses the known headquarters of key government and tech institutions, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), whose Tower 1 is an award-winning energy-efficient green building. It is a highly convenient residential choice for international students, expats & professionals.

My daughter, Jann and husband, Faiz with their family lives in this vibrant community. It is a major social & cultural focal point. Notably, the development hosts Lorong Belakang Cyberjaya, a bustling weekend back-alley street market that attracts thousands of visitors with local street food, live music & the indie vendors. Positioned on elevated ground, it provides scenic views of Cyberjaya & Putrajaya. It is connected to major highways: the MEX, LDP & ELITE.

Lorong Belakang Cyberjaya (LBC) is an award-winning weekly community street market that has transformed a once dark, neglected back alley behind Shaftsbury Square into one of the city's most vibrant night spots. The tagline “Powered by Youth” reflects its foundational mission: It is youth-led social enterprise initiative designed to provide economic, social networking opportunities for young entrepreneurs and a creative platform for the local talents.

Dr, Zul and family hoped “The future of LBC centers on scaling from a popular local night market into a standardized, nationwide model for youth-driven urban revitalization.” Pix: Fahmie

Fahmie, a colleague of my youngest son, Fariz, briefed me that “LBC night market was conceptualized and is managed by Youth Ventures Asia, a dynamic organization dedicated to empowering youth through entrepreneurship and community-building programs. It is a smart collaborative effort between the Shaftsbury Square and the local municipal council, Majlis Perbandaran (MP) Sepang, giving young people and undergraduates a legal, structured, and safe space to trade. It serves as an incubator for young entrepreneurs & students to launch small businesses, car-boot sales, creative pop-up food stalls.”

I observed LBC actively showcases young local musicians, buskers, and digital creators, allowing them to perform live, and build community connections.
