The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a setback on Saturday as its newly elected Municipal Councillor, Bhagwan Dass from ward number 13, joined the BJP in the presence of Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon here on Saturday.

After attending the “Sarv Samaj OBC Sammelan”, Dhillon reached the residence of Dass in the local MC Colony and formally inducted him into the BJP fold.

With the induction of the councillor, the BJP’s strength in the 25-member Fazilka Municipal Council has increased from 11 to 12 members. In the recently concluded municipal elections, the BJP had won 11 seats, followed by the Congress with nine and the AAP with five.

The BJP now needs the support of just one more councillor to secure the numbers required to elect its president in the Municipal Council.

Speaking to The Tribune, Dass said he had joined the BJP for the welfare of the common people and his ward residents and described the move as his “ghar wapsi” (homecoming). He had left the BJP a couple of years ago.

On the occasion, former Cabinet Minister Surjit Kumar Jyani said that anyone who believes in the principles of the BJP is welcome to join the party for the development of the town.
