The results of the Municipal Council (MC) elections across Hoshiarpur district have reaffirmed the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) stronghold on Punjab’s urban politics. While the Congress secured the second spot across several councils, a strong showing by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mukerian signals shifting political tides ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Council wise breakdown
In Dasuya AAP secured a landslide victory by winning 13 of 15 wards. The Congress claimed the remaining two, leaving the BJP and Independents empty-handed.
In Garhshankar AAP gained a clear majority by winning eight of 13 wards. Independents took four seats, while the Congress was relegated to just one.
Mukerian witnessed a significant shift with the BJP emerging as the single largest party, winning seven of 15 wards. This aligns with the constituency’s current political leaning, as it already hosts a BJP MLA. The Congress followed with six seats, while AAP managed only one.
In Gardhiwala Municipal Council, the AAP won in seven out of 11 wards, while the Congress secured three seats and one Independent candidate emerged victorious.
Tanda Municipal Council also saw a strong performance by AAP, which won in 10 out of 15 wards. The Congress managed to secure five seats, while the BJP and Independent candidates failed to register any victory.
Similarly, in Hariana Municipal Council, AAP won in seven out of 11 wards, the Congress secured three seats and the BJP won one seat.

The big picture across 80 wards in six councils
The AAP led the pack with 46 seats. The Congress followed with 20, the BJP with eight, and Independents with six. Notably, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) failed to open its account, highlighting a continuing decline in its urban influence.
Analysts suggest that while the Bhagwant Mann-led government is reaping the rewards of its welfare initiatives, the BJP is successfully consolidating the urban Hindu vote in specific pockets. For the Congress, the results underscore a need for organisational restructuring, while the SAD faces a period of deep introspection before the 2027 state polls.
