In a significant political development ahead of the forthcoming Punjab Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday replaced the halqa incharge of the Phagwara Assembly constituency with immediate effect, triggering fresh political discussions in the region.

According to a letter issued by Punjab AAP incharge Manish Sisodia and Punjab AAP president Aman Arora, senior party leader and Lok Sabha MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal has been appointed as the new halqa incharge of the Phagwara Assembly constituency.

He replaces Harnoor Singh Maan, who had been handling the responsibility till now.

The decision is being viewed as an important organisational reshuffle by the AAP leadership in the Doaba region.

Political observers believe the move reflects the party high command’s dissatisfaction with the performance and political management of Harnoor Singh Maan in the constituency. The replacement has come at a crucial time when all political parties have started strengthening their organisational structure in preparation for the next Assembly polls.

Notably, before Harnoor Singh Maan’s appointment, his father and former Punjab minister Joginder Singh Maan had been serving as the halqa incharge in Phagwara. The constituency has remained politically significant for the Maan family for several years, and the latest development is likely to alter the political equations within the local unit of the party.

The appointment of Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal is also being considered strategically important due to his growing influence in the Doaba belt and his recent elevation as an MP.

Party insiders feel that the leadership wants to bring a stronger and more active face to the constituency to consolidate the party’s base and address internal organisational challenges.

The sudden change has already generated considerable political heat in Phagwara, with supporters and party workers closely watching the impact of the reshuffle on local politics.

Political analysts believe the move may intensify factional activities within the constituency while simultaneously signalling the AAP leadership’s intention to tighten its grip on constituencies considered electorally sensitive ahead of the elections.
