In a recent statement, Aaron, a key figure in the education sector, emphasized the role of vernacular schools in fostering national unity and social harmony in Malaysia.
He pointed to enrollment data from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) showing a consistent increase in non-Chinese and non-Indian students from 2018 to 2023. This trend, according to Aaron, signifies a commitment from all parties towards building national unity.
Aaron highlighted the Ministry of Education's efforts in conducting a Social Deficit Discourse, which featured experts in the field. The findings concluded that vernacular schools should no longer be viewed as a source of racial division but rather as platforms for nurturing and managing social harmony, akin to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK).
To effectively manage social harmony in schools, Aaron identified four key factors: adaptability, goal orientation, integration, and latency. He stressed the importance of vernacular education sectors addressing these factors to promote social order within their institutions.
Moreover, Aaron called for an end to polemics surrounding vernacular schools, citing a Court of Appeal ruling in November 2023 that affirmed the constitutionality of these schools and the use of Mandarin and Tamil languages within them. He urged parties to respect the court's decision and refrain from actions that undermine unity and harmony among Malaysians.
Echoing the stance of Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Aaron affirmed his ministry's commitment to defending the vernacular education system, as it aligns with Section 28 of the Education Act 1996. Additionally, he highlighted the establishment of the Technical Committee on Rukun Negara Education, aimed at reinstating the understanding of the Rukun Negara principles in the national education system.
To promote a deeper understanding of the Rukun Negara among the younger generation, Aaron disclosed various initiatives, including the establishment of Rukun Negara Clubs and Secretariats nationwide. These efforts aim to instill the principles of Rukun Negara as a fundamental aspect of daily life.
Moving forward, Aaron outlined upcoming initiatives such as the Rukun Negara Exploration, Our King, Our Umbrella Programme, Royal Archives Exhibition, and the Rukun Negara Secretariat Convention. These initiatives signify a concerted effort by the ministry to reinforce the values of unity, harmony, and national identity among Malaysians across diverse backgrounds.
