Divorcing a spouse at the height of their vulnerability, especially after a life-altering breast cancer diagnosis, is not just an act of abandonment—it is a profound failure of the very foundation upon which marriage stands.
This growing trend in Malaysia, where breast cancer survivors are being left by their partners, sheds light on the heartbreaking reality of emotional and relational fragility in times of crisis.
Breast cancer is not just a personal battle; it is a challenge that demands shared resilience. The diagnosis impacts more than just the patient. It puts marriages, families, and entire support systems under immense pressure. When a spouse chooses to walk away, it exposes the uncomfortable truth that many marriages may be unprepared for the demands of caregiving, compassion, and patience that come with such a health crisis. For women already grappling with physical pain, fear of relapse, and the profound sense of loss that comes with disfigurement and changes to their sexual well-being, this desertion feels like a cruel double blow.
The unfortunate reality is that the societal norms in Malaysia, where traditional gender roles remain strong, exacerbate the emotional toll on breast cancer survivors. Many women feel that they are failing as wives and mothers if they can no longer fulfill the duties expected of them. This self-perception, coupled with the financial toxicity of cancer treatment—high costs, reduced household income due to prolonged absence from work—only increases their vulnerability. A spouse walking away in such a moment not only compounds the emotional trauma but also leaves these women struggling to navigate financial burdens alone.
Cancer, as Dr. Nur Fadhlina Abdul Satar from Pantai Hospital points out, is not contagious, and it certainly is not an excuse for abandonment.

The problem, however, runs deeper than a lack of awareness about the disease. It touches on the very concept of marriage itself: a partnership based on the understanding that life will bring sickness as well as health, joy as well as sorrow.
When a husband decides to divorce his wife after a breast cancer diagnosis, it reflects a broader societal failure to equip men with the emotional tools necessary to support a partner in distress. This betrayal becomes a stark reflection of how poorly we, as a society, teach young boys and men about empathy, patience, and the role they must play in caregiving.
The rising divorce rates following a cancer diagnosis suggest that we are failing to emphasise the importance of mutual support in our relationships. Cancer is not a journey that can be faced alone, and yet, so many women are left to do just that. The need for better support systems is urgent—not just for the patients, but for their partners as well. Resources for emotional counseling, financial assistance, and education about caregiving should be made widely available to help couples navigate the cancer journey together, rather than allowing it to tear them apart.
The message should be clear: breast cancer is treatable, and the scars left behind do not diminish the person a woman was before the diagnosis. Abandonment in such moments reveals a fundamental lack of understanding and respect for the resilience of these women. For marriages to truly stand the test of time, they must be built not just on love, but on the unwavering commitment to be there when it is hardest.
To leave a spouse during such a trial is to fail in the most profound way. It is time to start holding men accountable for such betrayals and to foster a society where compassion and support, rather than avoidance and selfishness, guide our actions in times of crisis.
