KUALA SELANGOR – A heartbreaking discovery near a local mosque in Kuala Selangor has sparked concern and debate across social media after a newborn baby was found abandoned in a recycling bag.

The incident, which was captured and shared in a video by Reddit user sebitian, shows the baby being discovered wrapped inside a bag left near the mosque’s compound. The infant, appearing to be only days old, was found alive and promptly rescued by concerned members of the public before being handed over to the authorities.

While the act of abandoning a child is condemned by many, the context has drawn mixed responses. Several users expressed anger and sadness, but also relief that the baby was left in a public and presumably safer location, instead of being dumped in more dangerous or life-threatening places.

“This is tragic, but at least the baby was not left in the drain or near the trash bins where they could have died,” one user commented. “Leaving them near a mosque shows a glimmer of hope that someone wanted the child to be found and saved.”

Others in the online community questioned the baby's future, particularly whether the child would be rendered stateless. In Malaysia, a child born out of wedlock or without proper documentation can face legal complications when it comes to citizenship.

Lawyers and human rights advocates have long called for reforms in how Malaysia handles cases of abandoned children, especially in terms of granting them access to healthcare, education, and nationality. While the Welfare Department will likely step in to provide temporary care, the baby’s long-term rights remain uncertain.

As of now, local authorities have not released an official statement, but an investigation is believed to be underway to locate the child’s parents and determine the circumstances that led to the abandonment.

The incident has reignited discussions on sex education, reproductive healthcare access, and the stigma faced by unwed mothers in Malaysia. While many sympathize with the desperation that may have led to the act, advocates stress the importance of systemic support to prevent such tragedies.

For now, Malaysians hope that the baby receives proper care, love, and — most importantly — a future.
