The past few years has seen Asian economies growing, despite COVID-19 and lockdowns outperform developed markets. E-poster courtesies of FAIM & IKATAN.

The World Economic Forum's (WEF) Annual Meeting 2023 which brought together leaders from government, business and civil society discussed the state of the world trends and priorities for the year ahead held from 16th to 20th January in Davos, Switzerland. The theme this year was "Cooperation in a Fragmented World". The key takeaways from WEF was the geopolitical and geo-economic wane turned from cooperation to competition, a slowdown of the Chinese economy and climate change.

This week 26th to 28th January in Jakarta, the Federation of Asian Institute of Management Alumni Associations (FAIM) in partnership with AIM Alumni Association Indonesia (IKATAN) is organising the Asian Business Conference (ABC) 2023. The spot-on theme is "Re-Imaging Inclusive Business Future for Sustainable Growth". The dialogues is to forge understanding and exchange insights among Asian business leaders of which most of them are successful and accomplished alumni of AIM.

During the pandemic, many Asian companies reinvented the way they operated. Those who embrace that moment to strengthen their resilience could position their companies to succeed. The economic outlook has been more buoyant in much of Asia than in North America or Europe. Resilience shows up during times of crisis.

Will the current business cycle in Asia turn for the better? The answer to that question will undoubtedly vary across the region; countries like India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia & Vietnam are still seeing relatively good growth while economy has slowed down in South Korea. A turn in business cycle demands leadership.

ABC is the major platform enabling FAIM members and associates to tap the potentials in this region because there are 40 countries in Asia today with a combined population as of 1st January, 2023 was estimated to be 4.772 billion. Asia is the largest of the world's continents, covering approximately 30% of the Earth's land area.

To drive for high-performance companies and to best motivate entrepreneurs, ABC must create a culture of collaboration instead of being a conference of competition. Compared to competitive behaviours, collaboration allows for a more transparent exchange of ideas and practical. When competition is about one-upmanship only, and not improvement or innovation, this can be detrimental to productivity and teamwork. In many ways, it may seem like collaboration is the exact opposite of competition.

The secret of Asian values is cultivating a business environment that fosters a culture of collaboration.  So, ABC can be renamed as the Asian Business Collaboration.
