Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has taken aim at Donald Trump and JD Vance following his victory in Michigan’s open US Senate race.
The son of Egyptian immigrants, El-Sayed is set to make history as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
Addressing supporters in his victory speech on Wednesday (4 November), he highlighted the irony of Vance being required to swear him into office in January.
“JD, there is this delicious irony in the fact that you’re constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January,” he said.
He then delivered a pointed message to Trump: “Donald, I know you struggle with my name, so after JD swears me in in January, you can go on and call me Senator.”
