In a podcast ‘Keluar Sekejap’, Khairy or KJ questioned the premier of Sarawak whether GPS would back, subject to certain restrictions, whoever wins the next General Election (GE) and forms the Federal Government.
Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, the premier of Sarawak, professionally denied assumptions made by certain parties that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government made several requests in exchange for backing to establish a federal government.
According to Abang Johari, GPS is simply seeking recognition of state rights as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) for whoever forms the Federal Government.
“The Constitution and MA63, which protect our rights, serve as the foundation for what we are doing right now. I want to ask back, 'Did I demand?' There is a notion in the Peninsula that we are too demanding. I've never made any demands. I adhere to the meanings of MA63 and the Constitution," said the premier of Sarawak.
Abang Johari continued, saying that the Sarawak government made no demands of the then-prime minister following GPS's formation in 2018.
He said, he also continued not to make demands until Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim headed the Federal Government.
"Let me be clear: we never made demands. I'm with you; you want me. I make no demands. Respect MA63; I have not asked anything from the three Prime Ministers thus far.
He says whoever wins the next term as prime minister has to recognize Sarawak's rights as stipulated in the Malaysia formation agreement.
"Any Prime Minister has to recognize MA63, and if later you (Khairy and Shahril) become Prime Minister, the same thing should also be recognized," he stated.
Thus, he claimed that GPS was not demanding because it was expressly stated in MA63, the Malaysian Constitution, and the Inter-Governmental Report (IGC) when Malaysia was formed.
