Three people, including a child and an auto-rickshaw driver, were killed in a tragic road accident that took place on Tuesday afternoon near Ramsara village, around 10 kilometres from Abohar, on a poorly maintained state highway.

The accident occurred when a pickup van collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw near a petrol pump close to Ramsara village. The impact was so severe that the auto-rickshaw was shattered into four pieces. The passengers inside were flung several feet away due to the force of the collision.

According to information, Devaki (60), a resident of Ramsara village, along with her daughter-in-law Poonam and Poonam’s two children — four-year-old Parmish and one-and-a-half-year-old Ritika — had gone to Azeemgarh in Abohar to attend a condolence meeting. While returning to their village, they boarded an auto-rickshaw driven by Deepak Swami, a resident of Kandhwala Road, Abohar.

As the auto-rickshaw reached near the petrol pump at Ramsara village, a speeding pickup van coming from the opposite direction allegedly lost control and rammed into the vehicle.

Devaki, her grandson Parmish, and auto-rickshaw driver Deepak Swami died on the spot. Poonam sustained serious injuries, while Ritika suffered minor injuries. Passersby immediately rushed the injured to the Civil Hospital for treatment.

Davinder Singh, in-charge of Wahabwala police station, along with Sub-Inspector Dharmpreet and a police team, reached the spot and seized the pickup van. Members of Nar Seva Narayan Seva Samiti helped shift the bodies to the hospital mortuary.
