About 300 residents told to evacuate following landslide

OCCUPANTS of 20 houses have been ordered to evacuate following a landslide near Jalan E6 in Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur.

Authorities, including the police, fire department, and Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, have instructed around 300 residents to vacate.

Ampang Jaya police chief Mohd Azam Ismail said they managed to inform only several residents for now as many were still at work.

"We have placed personnel at the scene to inform residents to evacuate for the time being for safety reasons," he said.

Heavy runoff from the hill has also led to several trees falling in the vicinity, damaging homes and vehicles.

Police received information about the landslide at about 10.30 am.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has also ordered a full investigation into the cause of the incident.

Nanta said an initial review by JKR found that a blocked drainage system might have triggered the landslide due to water flow disruption. - October 14, 2024
