Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister, has directed all ministries to kick off their new projects without waiting for the end of the first quarter, as announced in Budget 2024. The funds for these projects have already been disbursed to the various ministries, marking a historic move by the Treasury, which distributed funds in January, a departure from the usual practice.
During the recent two-day Cabinet Members’ Retreat, Anwar emphasized the need for a swift implementation of projects without the delay typically associated with the first quarter. He expressed satisfaction with the record achievements in the assessment of projects implemented in 2023 and urged ministries to build on this success by initiating projects promptly.
The retreat, attended by Anwar, 31 ministers, and other public officials, deviated from the norm as it incorporated insights not only from Cabinet members but also from local and international experts. Key topics of discussion included the economy, education, public service, digital transformation, renewable energy, and Artificial Intelligence.
Anwar highlighted the importance of open dialogue, stating that the government welcomes suggestions and criticisms to continually improve public services for the well-being of the rakyat. National unity, political stability, teamwork within the Cabinet, and effective policy implementation were among the issues discussed.
The Prime Minister disclosed that the selection process for the new Employees Provident Fund (EPF) chief executive officer (CEO) is underway, with several candidates being considered. However, he refrained from revealing names, emphasizing the need for thorough screening by institutions such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Inland Revenue Board, Bank Negara Malaysia, and the police. Anwar assured an expedited appointment process, though acknowledging it may take a few weeks.
The EPF CEO position became vacant with the appointment of Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan as Finance Minister II in December, and Anwar stressed the commitment to ensuring a diligent and transparent appointment process for this key role.
