  • Andy Weir, author of The Martian and Project Hail Mary, has apologised to Star Trek boss Alex Kurtzman after criticising the franchise's modern series.
  • Weir had previously stated in a podcast that current Star Trek spin-offs “are s***” and mentioned his own pitch for a show was rejected.
  • In an open letter on Facebook, Weir claimed his quotes were “taken out of context” and that he was trying to be “funny” and “self-deprecating”.
  • He clarified that he likes Kurtzman as a person and enjoys some of the newer shows, specifically mentioning Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks.
  • Weir attributed his bluntness to having a film in cinemas and 'forgot to watch my words', offering to discuss the matter further with Kurtzman.
