KENINGAU: The Bingkor Community Welfare Association (PKMB) has urged the local authority and relevant agencies to take action to address the problem of stray dogs roaming freely around Keningau town, including entering restaurants and eateries.
Its Chairman, Yazid Mohd Hasnan Tawik @ Charles, said the problem had been ongoing for a long time and was causing discomfort among food premises operators and customers.
“We understand that animals also have rights that need to be protected, but at the same time, the safety, cleanliness and comfort of the public cannot be taken lightly,” he said.
He said some restaurant and coffee shop operators had to chase away dogs that entered their premises, but the animals would often return.
Yazid said the presence of stray dogs could disturb customers, raise concerns over food hygiene and pose safety risks, particularly to children and members of the public.
He said Keningau town was an important centre for the community and business activities, making cleanliness, safety and the town’s overall appearance important.
He urged the local authority, Keningau District Council and relevant agencies to conduct inspections and take appropriate action under existing laws and regulations.
Among the measures proposed were identifying dog owners, conducting regular stray dog management operations and providing a more effective channel for public complaints.
Yazid also urged pet owners to be responsible and ensure their dogs did not roam freely, particularly in public areas and food premises.
“This is not about hating animals, but about shared responsibility. Animal welfare must be safeguarded, as must public safety, health and the community’s right to enjoy a clean and comfortable environment,” he said.
