Governor Gulab Chand Kataria emphasised the need to adopt Satguru Ram Singh’s ideology to make Punjab a drug-free state.
During his first visit to Sri Bhaini Sahib, the Governor paid obeisance and addressed a “Gurmat Samagam”, a religious gathering.
He said the roots of India’s freedom struggle were laid by Satguru Ram Singh, who initiated a movement of non-cooperation against the British rule, and provided religious, social and political direction to the society.
Highlighting the teachings of Satguru Ram Singh, Kataria said his principles of truth, non-violence and civil resistance should serve as the foundation for social reform, as they did during the freedom struggle.
He recalled sacrifices of the Kuka Sikhs and said the brave revolutionaries fought fearlessly against the British rule and laid down their lives. He added the contribution of Namdhari Sikhs can never be forgotten.
Kataria said Satguru Ram Singh followed the path of non-violence shown by the Sikh Gurus, and led a complete boycott of the British rule and its privileges.
Describing the Namdhari sect as a symbol of simplicity, truthfulness and humility, the Governor urged people to follow the path shown by the Gurus for spiritual and social uplifting.
During the visit, the Governor also visited the historic Ram Mandir within Sri Bhaini Sahib, where the Kuka movement against the British rule began in 1857. He checked a photo exhibition displayed at the site.
