Who knew a blunder could turn into a marketing strategy?

Just a few days back, a Malaysian found herself under fire after claiming that a spice brand, McCormick contains pork in its products. The truth is, the label stated that the spice can be USED ON different meats, including pork. In response to the viral video, Aeon Retail Malaysia has taken the golden opportunity to promote a product of McCormick while entertaining fellow Malaysians.

In a Facebook post today (January 19), Aeon shared a picture of McCormick’s Mixed Spice, with a caption that cleverly (and subtly) references the recent viral video.

“Suitable for marination if you have an English education.”

“Aeon is savage”

It did not take long for the post to gain the attention of fellow Malaysians, who were mostly entertained by the retail company’s brilliant comeback. Check out their comments below.

A netizen has since jokingly asked Aeon to move the spice to the non-Halal section, which Aeon has also played along.

Another netizen said that a dictionary should also be given to the girl who claimed that the spice contains pork.

“Aeon learns from Mydin.”

“You’re done, kid. You’re famous now.”

Halal issues can be sensitive, so it’s wise to always double-check the label of an item before confirming the Halal status of the product. Regardless, do you think Aeon aced this marketing strategy?
