AFP Drives Away Chinese Fishing Boats Using Suspected Cyanide Near Ayungin Shoal

The Armed Forces of the Philippines said troops under its Western Command intercepted and drove away Chinese fishing boats allegedly engaged in illegal fishing near Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea last week, confiscating bottles of suspected cyanide chemicals believed to be used for destructive fishing.

In a statement released Sunday, October 26, AFP spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad said the incident took place on October 24 near Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal, where Philippine forces maintain a small outpost through the grounded warship BRP Sierra Madre.
