Previously, we shared about the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) Ops Pemandu Warga Asing (PeWA) operation conducted by its Perlis state department in October 2024 which managed to collect RM31,600 in unpaid compounds from Thai vehicles in the state.
Now, another operation by JPJ targetting Thailand vehicles has bore fruit, this time called the Ops Saman Tertunggak Kenderaan Pendaftaran Asing Thailand (Ops Tunggak) and conducted in Kelantan, Kedah, Perak and Perlis since 1 January 2025.
JPJ conducts Ops Tunggak targeting Thailand-registered vehicles in Malaysia
According to Kosmo!, as of 24 January, JPJ has taken action against 172 foreign vehicles and issued 619 notices to owners and drivers of Thailand-registered vehicles for various traffic offences.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli asserted that most Thailand-registered vans in Malaysia misused the International Circulation Permit (ICP) and didn’t adhere to the Road Transport Act 1987.
He further elaborated that these Thailand-registered vehicles transport tourists and passengers in Malaysia, but the ICP issued to them was only for personal use in our country. Moreover, some even transported cooks from Thailand to food premises in Malaysia.
JPJ collected RM425,104 from outstanding summonses from foreign drivers and owners of foreign vehicles
Through Ops Tunggak, JPJ seized 16 Thailand-registered vans in Kelantan for various offences, including misusing ICP, no valid driving licence and tinted windows.
Furthermore, as of 24 January, JPJ has collected a whopping RM425,104 from 332 outstanding summonses that are finally paid by the offenders.
Notably, JPJ revealed that one Thailand van driver finally paid 85 outstanding summonses worth RM25,200. These 85 summonses have been unpaid since 3 years ago, which include the offence of misusing ICP.
The driver finally paid all of the summonses after their vehicle was seized, as they needed to settle all of the outstanding summonses to get the van back.
