SPM results are out! Almost half a million students who set for the SPM have received their results.

To those who have done very well – congratulations. The media and social media are all out to publicise the achievement of these students.

Students are being interviewed. Schools, HMs and teachers are celebrating. Facebook is used to the maximum.

You can see dozens of photos of children and their parents.

Proud students are holding the signage to show how they did in their SPM.

It is indeed very good to see all the happy faces.

Parents should also be proud of their children who have done well.

Many of the children who have done well will be aspiring to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, dentists and pharmacists.

They will be applying for all the scholarships which are being advertised in the social media.

The race for scholarships will begin now. Parents will be wondering which politician to approach and which strings to pull.

The race is going to be tough. This is a yearly affair.

Then you have another group of students who will be rushing to apply for matriculation programmes, polytechnics and universities.

Some of them know that you can apply for courses which will help them easily to get into universities.

They will be rushing to apply to the best universities and the best courses in local universities.

If these students have very good results they will be offered places. However, it is competitive.

When everyone is talking about the students who have done very well in their SPM, for a minute think about the students who didn’t make the grade.

Society is quick to brand them as drop outs and failures.

They are given very little attention, support or motivation.

As far as society is concerned it is best that these students get a job and carry on with life. Is it fair?

For students who did not do well in their SPM

There are many reasons why you did not do well. It could be because of the following reasons:-

You did not put in much effort. You did not study or work very hard. You were not interested in studies. You simply could not study. You couldn’t concentrate n your studies.

You were sick during the exam. You had an accident. You were in bed. Someone close to you passed away.

Something was disturbing or distracting your attention. You were not able to concentrate on your studies.

You did very well. You think you answered all the questions correctly.

You were expecting very good results but when the results came out, you couldn’t believe it. Maybe something went wrong.

You were just waiting for the exams to be over. Your parents were pressuring you to finish your SPM. So you did it to satisfy them. Passing or failing does not bother you at all.

Theses are the common reasons that students give for doing badly in their SPM. There could be other reasons too. Let us look at the above reasons and suggest some ways to assist them.

SPM is a very important exam for all. Whenever you apply for a job, financial help or any kind of assistance, they will refer to your SPM results.

Since it is a very important exam, you must sit for the SPM.

You can self-study. If you have not done very well in your SPM, please re-sit. Don’t feel ashamed.

Don’t worry about other people’s views. Give yourself a second chance. You can either sit for the whole SPM exam or just sit for a few particular subjects.

If you feel that the examiners could have made a mistake, request the syndicate to re-mark the papers.

There could have been a mistake. It is your paper. You know how well you did in your exam.

If you are not satisfied, request the authorities to re-mark your papers. It is your right to request.

If you are convinced that you don’t want to re-sit, it is your choice. You can either move on to get a job or learn a skill.

There are many employers who provide practical training.
