Following the recent High Court decision to clear Yusoff Rawther of serious drug and firearms charges, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has announced intentions to revisit and enhance its internal processes to address potential investigative gaps.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain indicated that a detailed internal review will be conducted once the full written grounds of the judgment are made available. This reassessment aims to strengthen current standard operating procedures (SOPs) and reinforce the quality and precision of police investigations moving forward.

Acknowledging the varied public responses to the acquittal, Razarudin noted that such discourse highlights the importance of safeguarding fairness and integrity in the justice system. He reiterated that all cases are evaluated impartially, regardless of the individuals involved, with final decisions resting with the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution.

Commenting on speculation regarding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s role in the investigation, Razarudin explained that questioning the Prime Minister was not deemed necessary. He clarified that after Yusoff’s police report was filed on September 12, 2024, the authorities opened two separate investigation papers—one regarding alleged cannabis possession and another related to imitation firearms. Both were submitted to the AGC for further action, with recommendations for charges based on the evidence at hand.

According to the IGP, the case was assessed strictly on its merits, and there was no procedural need to involve any other individuals in questioning at that stage, including the Prime Minister.

Razarudin also affirmed that PDRM remains committed to continuously improving its procedures. He noted that judicial outcomes, particularly those not favoring prosecution, serve as important opportunities for institutional learning and enhancement of investigative practices.

Yusoff Rawther had faced accusations involving possession of over 300 grams of cannabis and two imitation firearms, linked to a September 2024 incident. However, on June 12, the High Court ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case, resulting in Yusoff’s full acquittal of all charges.
