THE Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has filed a notice of appeal against the decision of the Muar Sessions Court, which imposed a RM6,000 fine on a 56-year-old man convicted of possessing child sexual abuse material involving his 15-year-old stepdaughter.
In a statement issued today, the AGC confirmed that the appeal was filed following the court's ruling on the man, who had pleaded guilty under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792).
The defendant was found to have possessed material depicting child sexual abuse, including 18 video recordings and several explicit images of the victim, his stepdaughter, while she was bathing.
"After reviewing the decision of the Muar Sessions Court, the AGC has today filed a notice of appeal to challenge the imposed fine," the statement read.
The AGC highlighted that under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, the maximum penalty for such an offence is five years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
On 19 March, the Muar Sessions Court had sentenced the man, a cleaning worker, to a fine of RM6,000 or six months' imprisonment after he admitted to possessing 18 videos and several images of his stepdaughter, aged 15, in compromising situations while she was bathing. – March 25, 2025
