THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has dismissed as not new the assertions made yesterday by Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah suggesting that his client, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, was denied a fair trial in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
Without detailing the statements made by Shafee, the AGC emphasised that the points raised in the defence lawyer’s press briefing were issues previously examined and argued at the High Court throughout the 1MDB trial.
“The AGC stresses that any matters stated by the defence lawyer about the trial of the 1MDB case involve issues that have been raised and tried throughout the trial period from August 28, 2019, until November 4, 2025,” the Chambers said in a statement today.
The AGC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting prosecutions independently, fairly, and with integrity.
Shafee’s comments, circulated through a four-page press statement handed out to the media by Najib’s aide, contended that the former Prime Minister had not been afforded a fair trial.
Among the claims cited were the inability to obtain certain evidence from Goldman Sachs’ former banker Roger Ng, the absence of Low Taek Jho from Malaysia to face charges, and that witnesses who testified against Najib in the 1MDB proceedings had not been prosecuted themselves.
Shafee, however, acknowledged that the fair trial argument had already been raised during the trial and stressed that he was not seeking to delay the High Court’s final decision by reiterating these points.
The High Court is scheduled next Friday to deliver its verdict on Najib’s culpability regarding 25 charges, including abuse of power to obtain financial benefits amounting to RM2.2 billion and alleged money laundering activities, notably the transfer of RM2.08 billion from 1MDB into Najib’s personal accounts.
The AGC’s response underscores the position that all defence contentions have been considered within the existing trial framework, reinforcing the judiciary’s long-standing process in the complex and high-profile 1MDB case. - December 19, 2025
