The recent uproar surrounding the sale of socks bearing the word "Allah" at convenience stores has garnered the attention of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim. In a Facebook post, the king expressed his displeasure and called for decisive action against those responsible for the controversy.
Sultan Ibrahim emphasized the reverence Muslims hold for the word "Allah" and stressed that such matters should not provoke anger. He urged enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the issue and ensure strict measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future, regardless of whether the socks were imported or produced locally.
The controversy surfaced when images of the socks being sold at KK Mart's Bandar Sunway store circulated on social media last Wednesday. In response, the company issued an apology on Saturday, expressing regret for the incident.
Authorities have received 36 reports regarding the socks and have launched an investigation into the matter for causing disharmony and misusing network facilities.
Meanwhile, the vendor firm responsible for supplying the socks to KK Mart, Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, based in Johor, revealed that it is contemplating legal action against its supplier in China for negligence. The company stated that its supplier admitted to including the socks "by mistake" in a larger shipment of 18,800 pairs ordered from a company in Zhejiang province, China.
Sultan Ibrahim questioned how a company with local employees could be unaware of the sensitivities surrounding the word "Allah" and deemed such oversight as unacceptable. He reiterated his recent call for all Malaysians to uphold harmony and refrain from touching on sensitive issues related to royalty, race, and religion, as he emphasized during his inaugural address to the Dewan Rakyat last month.
Reflecting on Malaysia's diverse and pluralistic society, Sultan Ibrahim emphasized the importance of unity and mutual respect among the country's multiracial population. He underscored that mistakes concerning religion and race cannot be tolerated and should not recur.
The king's intervention underscores the seriousness of the issue and highlights the need for sensitivity and vigilance in matters concerning religious and cultural sensitivities in Malaysia. It also emphasizes the importance of upholding unity and respect among the nation's diverse communities.
