LONDON: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, were among the 2,000 guests who attended the coronation of King Charles III today.

They arrived in London on Wednesday for a special visit until May 14, at the invitation of King Charles to attend the ceremony.

Heads of state, heads of government and dignitaries from all over the world were present as King Charles was crowned in Westminster Abbey in a ceremony steeped in tradition. The coronation of the King and Queen Camilla was followed by millions around the world via live telecasts.

Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah are the first Malaysian royal couple to attend a British monarch’s coronation.

The last time a similar ceremony was held, 70 years ago for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, four sultans represented Malaya (then under British rule). They were the Sultan of Kelantan, the Sultan of Johor, the Sultan of Selangor and the Sultan of Perak.

Twelve members of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment were among the 6,000 members of the armed services of the UK and 38 Commonwealth countries who took part in the coronation parades and marches.
