PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar named new Perikatan Nasional chairman after Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation
KUALA LUMPUR: PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has been appointed the new chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
The decision was made at the coalition’s Supreme Council meeting today, which formally accepted the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as PN chairman and unanimously approved the appointment of Ahmad Samsuri, who is also the Terengganu chief minister.
In a media statement, the announcement was made by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, PN assistant secretary-general, during a press conference at the PAS central headquarters following the meeting.
His appointment was also confirmed to theSun by Malaysian Indian People Party (MIPP) leader Punithan Paramsiven.
Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said the decision was in line with PN’s principles, which emphasise inclusivity and the shared struggle of all parties within the coalition.
“We congratulate him. We hope he will carry out all responsibilities, especially towards achieving victory in the 16th General Election (GE16),” he said.
Muhyiddin had led PN since its formation in 2020.
He announced his resignation last year following a series of political developments that weakened his position within the coalition. The move was widely linked to the prolonged fallout from the political crisis in Perlis.
