TERENGGANU Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has been named the new chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN) following the coalition's extraordinary Supreme Council meeting today.
This was announced by Gerakan President Datuk Dominic Lau after the conclusion of the meeting at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Samsuri was proposed by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to fill the position left vacant since Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stepped down on January 1.
The move to appoint Dr Samsuri is seen as a new chapter in the direction of PN, after a series of internal tensions involving PAS and Bersatu since the leadership crisis in Perlis, which became a major turning point in the dynamics of the coalition.
“Former chairman Muhyiddin chaired the meeting. We first endorsed his resignation, after which PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang nominated Ahmad Samsuri to be the next chairman,” he said.
“It was a unanimous decision, and there was no objection from anyone,” said Lau.
He said the coalition’s constitution would be amended to enable the formation of a president’s council, in addition to the supreme council.
“We congratulate him,” he said, adding that the coalition hoped Samsuri would “carry out all necessary work, especially towards achieving victory in the 16th general election.”
Samsuri is also a vice-president of PAS, and fills the post left vacant since Muhyiddin stepped down. - February 22, 2026
