ARTIFICIAL Intelligence (AI) is increasingly at the forefront of Kuala Lumpur’s transformation into a smart city, playing a crucial role in both urban planning and real-time city management.
This was highlighted during Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong’s visit to the Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre (KLCCC), a facility central to the Ministry of Digital’s mission of promoting digital technology adoption, including AI and 5G, nationwide.
In a statement, the Ministry of Digital noted that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is actively integrating AI across its urban operations through two flagship initiatives: Digital Twin and AI-powered Traffic Management.
“The Digital Twin initiative provides a virtual model of the city, allowing for real-time simulations that enhance planning efficiency and emergency response,” the ministry said.
“Meanwhile, the AI Traffic Management System optimises traffic flow and detects incidents in real time, helping to reduce congestion and improve road safety.”
In support of Malaysia’s smart city ecosystem, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), will host the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (SCEKL 2025) from 17 to 19 September. The event aims to showcase Malaysia’s aspirations and progress in smart urban development.
DNB reported that 5G coverage across Malaysia has now surpassed 82 per cent, forming a critical foundation for deploying AI-based solutions across multiple sectors.
MDEC, for its part, reiterated its commitment to positioning Malaysia as a regional leader in digital transformation and smart city development, through various strategic initiatives focused on future technologies.
