ARTIFICIAL intelligence (AI) could exacerbate the gender pay gap in various industries, including construction, manufacturing and energy, according to a recent study.
Bernama-dpa reported on Tuesdays that a consultancy known as AINigma noted that sectors such as logistics, utilities, private equity and the creative arts might also experience an increase in wage disparities between men and women.
However, the pay gap could potentially narrow in fields like legal services, public sector, journalism and marketing.
London-based AINigma’s Chief Executive Officer, Arne Mosselman, explained: “On average, 20 per cent more men use generative AI tools like ChatGPT compared to women.”
“This means there is a significant risk that generative AI may act as a catalyst to widen the gender pay gap rather than reduce it.”
He added that with 42 per cent of office workers reporting they use generative AI at work, and one in three admitting to concealing this usage, companies must provide clear guidance and permission regarding AI use in the workplace to avoid further gender inequality in the future. - September 30, 2025
