AI sleep test can identify a person’s risk of heart disease a decade in advance

  • Scientists have demonstrated that an artificial intelligence model can predict a person's 10-year risk of heart disease from a single night of sleep.
  • The model analyses ECG data recorded during standard sleep studies to identify long-term risks such as heart attacks, strokes, and irregular heartbeats.
  • Researchers trained and validated the AI system using sleep study data from over 37,000 patients across multiple US medical centres.
  • The AI retained its predictive accuracy even after adjusting for traditional risk factors, including age, sex, body mass index, diabetes, and hypertension.
  • Experts say integrating this low-cost, accessible technology into sleep studies could significantly improve early detection and proactive cardiovascular care.
