Based on an interview by CNN with the CEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, he predicts that artificial intelligence will cause a spike in the unemployment rate, which will affect Malaysia too.
Amodei stated that AI is slowly becoming better than humans at almost all intellectual tasks, including those that Amodei himself and other CEOS perform.
He believes that AI tools companies use and are building will eliminate almost half of the current entry-level and white-collar jobs, which could raise unemployment rates by 20% in the near future, as early as in the next five years.
Amodei said industries that will be most affected are law, marketing, tech and finance.
How serious is 20%? Well, the current rate of unemployment is at 4%, which is a dramatic predicted increase of around 18%.
If what Amodei says is true, AI will wipe out jobs that usually require years of training and education.
“Everyone I’ve talked to has said this technology change looks different,” says Amodei. “It looks faster, it looks harder to adapt to, it’s broader. The pace of progress keeps catching people off guard.”
Not long ago, the Ministry of Human Resources reported saying Malaysia’s job market will be affected by AI, up to 1.8 million jobs to be exact, affecting many employees who feel the use of AI should be regulated by the government.
We have already seen companies overseas like Walmart and Microsoft lay off a large number of employees because of their increased use of AI, easily replacing even high-positioned employees.
Walmart is cutting 1,500 corporate jobs, while Microsoft is laying off 6000 employees – 6% of their company.
So, how can you save your career?
According to Amodei’s advice, learn to work with AI, not against it – double down on what AI struggles with: making actual human connections and actually doing things in person.
