Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to a hospital in Tehran, her foundation said on Sunday, after she spent more than a week in intensive care after collapsing in her prison cell.
The 54-year-old had been receiving treatment in a hospital in the north-western city of Zanjan, where she was also being held in prison.
Mohammadi was granted a temporary suspension of her sentence in exchange for the payment of a substantial bail bond, the foundation said in a statement.
Her transfer by ambulance has been completed, and she is now being treated at Tehran's Pars Hospital by her own medical team, the statement said. Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, also confirmed the transfer on social media.
Mohammadi’s husband, Taghi Rahmani, who lives in Paris, said on Saturday that her condition remained critical. In a post on X, he wrote that she had suffered a severe drop in blood pressure and was now struggling to speak.
Rahmani and other family members had long called for Mohammadi to be transferred to Tehran so she could be treated by specialist doctors of her choosing.
The United States on Friday also urged Iran to release Mohammadi immediately.
“The world is watching,” said Riley Barnes, a senior US State Department official responsible for human rights, in a post on X calling for her to receive the necessary medical treatment.
