An Air India flight from Chicago to Delhi was forced to make an emergency u-turn on March 6 due to technical issues.

According to the Hindustan Times, the plane had to return after multiple toilets became clogged, leaving it no choice but to head back to the United States.

Only one toilet was working

According to flightradar24.com, the Boeing 777-337 ER had already been in the air for over 10 hours before it finally turned back to Chicago’s ORD airport, as reported by The Times of India.

The plane, which can carry over 340 passengers across first, business, and economy class, has 10 toilets, including two for first-class travellers.

A source revealed that by the time the plane turned around, only one toilet was still working.

All passengers were offered a refund

A spokesperson said in a statement that once the plane landed in Chicago, all passengers and crew got off as usual and were given accommodations to reduce any inconvenience.

“After landing in Chicago, everyone disembarked normally and was provided with accommodation. We’re making alternative arrangements to get them to their destination,” the spokesperson added.

The airline also confirmed that passengers were offered full refunds for cancellations and free rescheduling if they wanted to use it.
