John van 't Schip insists Jordan Henderson is no panic buy.
The 33 year-old former Liverpool captain joined Ajax last week on a free transfer from Al-Ettifaq.
Van 't Schip said: "He is a free transfer, so it is not a purchase. But of course it does cost something. I don't think he's a panic buy. When you see how much publicity and attention he receives, and rightly so, it shows what he has achieved and what he means."
Van 't Schip expects a lot from his latest acquisition.
"He is the type of player who does what we lack. But you need several players like that. We hope that it will have a positive effect on the rest of the group if he trains and plays with us."
