In 2024, veteran DAP politician Teresa Kok filed a defamation lawsuit against Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over statements allegedly made about her in relation to the country’s halal certification issue.

As reported by Berita Harian, Teresa claimed that Dr Muhamad Akmal had defamed her in two articles published on a news portal on 8 September that year, titled “Akmal: I Asked the Government to Prepare a Non-Halal Logo to Stick on Teresa’s Forehead” and “UMNO Youth Chief Takes a Swipe at ‘Old Nyonya‘ Teresa Over Halal Cert”.

Akmal puts two prized assets up for bids to raise RM300,000 to pay Teresa

The High Court recently ordered Akmal to pay Teresa RM250,000 in general and aggravated damages, along with RM50,000 in legal costs, after she won the defamation lawsuit against him.

Following the ruling, Akmal took to Facebook to announce that he would be putting two of his prized assets, his Honda X-ADV motorcycle and tilapia fish from his own farm, up for bids to raise the RM300,000 needed to pay Teresa.

In his post, Akmal said he respected the court’s decision and was prepared to take full responsibility for paying the amount. However, he hoped to raise the money on his own first by selling some of his belongings.

“To be honest, RM300,000 is a huge amount for me. Even after calculating all my savings, I still do not have enough to cover it.

“That is why, with a heavy heart, I am opening up bids for two of my prized assets. As long as I still have things of my own that I can let go of, please allow me to try that first,” he wrote.

“Even writing that I want to sell them feels difficult”

Akmal also shared that the Honda X-ADV motorcycle and tilapia fish were the only two assets he had fully paid off and could sell to raise the money, as he did not own any land or property that he could sell to cover the amount.

“Both hold their own stories, hard work and happy memories for me. That is why even writing that I want to sell them feels difficult,” he wrote.

He also took the opportunity to thank his supporters for their prayers, kind words and encouragement, saying that their support meant a great deal to him during this difficult time.
