UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has signalled that his tenure at the helm of the party’s youth wing may be nearing its end, suggesting that he has reached the limits of what he can contribute after consistently conveying grassroots concerns to the party leadership.

In a statement issued on 7 January 2026, the Merlimau state assemblyman reflected on his role and acknowledged that he had done everything within his capacity to articulate the sentiments and expectations of UMNO’s grassroots. He indicated that any perceived shortcomings should be attributed to himself, adding that the possibility of stepping aside was something he was now contemplating.

Akmal also expressed appreciation for those who had stood with him throughout what he described as a demanding political struggle. He conveyed confidence that efforts driven by sincerity and guided by principles centred on religion, community and national interest would eventually bear fruit, even if immediate outcomes were not forthcoming.

His remarks came a day after he publicly welcomed UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s readiness to review the party’s current political cooperation, following proposals raised during the UMNO Youth Special Convention held earlier in January. Akmal interpreted the leadership’s response as an opening for deeper reflection on UMNO’s future direction, particularly in relation to Malay political unity.

At the convention, Akmal had been among the strongest advocates for reassessing UMNO’s alliances. He argued that any serious effort to unite the Malay electorate should begin with cooperation between UMNO and PAS, as the two largest Malay-based political parties. At the same time, he emphasised that such discussions should not be linked to attempts to destabilise the existing federal administration through backdoor political manoeuvres.

He later acknowledged Zahid’s willingness to consider these proposals, describing it as a constructive step rather than an immediate policy shift. According to Akmal, the process of examining suitable forms of cooperation was itself an important starting point, regardless of the eventual outcome.

Akmal’s comments on possibly relinquishing his post have added to speculation about internal tensions within UMNO, particularly between its youth wing and senior leadership. His outspoken stance in recent months has drawn both support and criticism, positioning him as a prominent yet polarising figure within the party.

While no formal decision has been announced, Akmal’s latest remarks suggest a moment of reckoning for the UMNO Youth chief. Whether he ultimately chooses to resign or continue navigating the party’s internal challenges, his statements underline the growing pressure facing UMNO’s younger leadership as it seeks to reconcile grassroots demands with the party’s broader political strategy ahead of the next general election.
